First off, I’m not totally sure what is the best way to go about eating around workouts. For a while I wasn’t going to the gym until 845 – 9am. After drinking coffee at 6am and sitting around after dropping Layla at school I needed to eat something.
Then we started going at 8am right after drop off which means I have 6am coffee then run around getting kids together (and Facebooking) all morning and don’t eat before the gym. I hear that’s good for the whole burn fat not food idea. Totally makes sense! But then I’m tired and starving.
The other day T and I were at Walmart checking out protein powders and bars. One box of…Pure Protein maybe? I dunno. One box of bars had a $1 off coupon on it (Score!) so I grabbed a couple to try. I think they were pre workout energy bars if it really makes any difference. Either way, scarfing one of those down on the way to the gym was enough to keep me going.
And then we ran out. And then we had other random small bits before the gym and I’ve been SO hungry and yawny while there. I need. more. bars.
So I decided to Google and make my own. I used the Honey Protein Bar recipe HERE
Ingredients:
5 scoops Whey protein powder
2 cups Oats
10 tbsp Honey (or 9ish if you lose count while trying to take pictures)
1 cup Peanut Butter
1 cup Milk
4ish tbsp Milled Flaxseed (not in original recipe. I like to be crazy and add things. Prolly why most of what I cook turns out bad…)
I used Jillian Michaels triple chocolate shake by Pure Protein because I buy everything with Jillian Michaels on it. Not really (but kinda). I had a coupon, needed chocolate, and that was the smallest (cheapest) tub. My bigger tub of vanilla has more grams of protein but I thought the choco peanut butter would be yummy.
Add everything to a bowl
And then dump in a bigger bowl when you realize it wont fit
I thought about using vanilla almond milk but then I realized regular milk has more protein. That’s what I’m trying for right? Protein?
And MIX!
I sprayed my Melissa’s dish with Pam first. Not sure if it needed it but why not. It was super gooey.
Spread it in and pop it in the fridge to set. Once it’s hard cut into squares and think of some clever way to store it. Im thinking snack sized zipper bags because I hate plastic wrap.
Mine is still in the setting phase so I can’t tell you how they really turned out. But I will!
I stuck the recipe into Fatsecret.com as 10 servings and this is what it gave me:
Do you make your own protein/energy/granola bars? Any good recipes?
