Riding the Derby High

Wednesday night our little roller derby league that could was filmed by ESPN.  Did you read that? E. S. P. N!! We some how pulled together a last minute midweek scrimmage so they could film us! The clips, I believe, will be part of a half time Korea sports montage that will be played November 9 during the Oregon Ducks vs Georgetown basketball game that will be played HERE! It’s really exciting stuff.

Our small beginning. Mobsta (#4) and I are the only ones left

Seriously, yall…I came into this league a year and a half ago when it started up. We had maybe 6-8 people skating outside on an unfinished concrete roller hockey rink. In March. It was COLD. And then it warmed up and got HOT! With the hard work of some amazing skaters we were able to get a practice space in an old gym on post which has now turned into us being sponsored and allowed in the BIG fancy new gym! I’m very proud of what all we have accomplished here.

Let me just throw out there that we are a REC league. We are nothing fancy or big and most of us know we might get eaten alive when we move on to skate in the states…but that’s ok. We are here and we are having a blast! We just want to play. These ladies will always have a place in my heart and I can’t wait to skate with them all again once we’ve moved on from our OH! Derby days.

We have another bout tonight. This will be our regularly schedule monthly bout. I really like having derby twice a week! Usually we only practice on Sunday afternoons as a league. Sometimes a few of us get together during the week to skate for a bit. We are small fish in a huge ocean of derby. I’m just excited I get to be a part of it!

Huge thank you to the awesome Alishia Potter of The Potter’s Hand Photography for taking sooo many great pictures for us!

  1. Sooo cool. I’ve always wanted to do roller derby. I almost did when I lived in Hawaii, but the timing wasn’t right, and then I got pregnant!

  2. ESPN! WHOA!!!!!!!!!!

I totally hear you about leagues being small but mighty…derby does amazing things for people. My new league here is in its infancy and it’s been amazing to watch it grow.

So cool. It’s awesome because it’s exercise and fun and all girls! I would be terrible though. I’m horrible on skates!
